What means featured gallery?

even if I can guess the meaning of "staff picked", I have no clue, what the idea behind the featured gallery is

My guess is that the "Featured" gallery includes photos that this site highlights as being best of class for various reasons. You will notice that those images are usually fairly professional both technically and artistically speaking. Staff picks seems to be a wider range of images that site employees find interesting or cool but the technical or artistic qualities need not be not at the level of those in the Featured gallery. Just my opinion...
